Oh Chanel…..You elude me. But one day you will be mine. I don’t know what has happened but suddenly I can’t stop thinking about the Chanel 2.55 Double Flap bag. I am not talking about the jumbo model but just a small little bag that would look stunning with my wardrobe. An investment piece. A classic. See how I am in dream land.
After 10 years with my company I thought I could spoil myself and invest in this baby. So while in Hong Kong several weeks ago, I took a friend and hit the biggest store. First of all…..no one told me you have to line up to get into the store and that it is “preferred” that you know what you want before you walk in. I have visited a many Louis Vuitton, Burberry etc while in Europe and the US and never was stopped at the door. Fortunately the wait was only a few minutes and we were escorted into the wonder that is Chanel. Finally I had the 2.55 in my hands. I love the idea of the secret zip compartment designed by Coco herself to store love letters and the lining’s burgundy colour representing Coco’s uniform at the convent where she grew up. I thought I wanted the Caviar Leather (thinking that it might be more tough wearing. See here for differences) but I fell in love with the lambskin instead.
Then came….the price. I had a price cap in mind and quite willing to spend an inconvenient amount of money. But at the new price of approx. $5000, I could not do it. According to an article I read on Levo League the price of a 2.55 bag has raised approx. 84% from 2010-2012. OMG! Some might see this as a good investment but I saw it as a portion of a nice car.
Is it the name, the history or the statement that I am after? Or is it just because you can’t replace the timeless beauty that is the Chanel 2.55? Whatever it is, I will continue to dream and one day, just one day it may be mine. But first I have to buy that car….
